About this Blog

This blog’s a blend of local and national politics, current affairs and whatever else passes me by – if it takes your fancy, add my blog to your favourites.  Each week I’ll write a commentary on Prime Minister’s Questions, based on my behind-the-scenes experience of working as the Prime Minister’s Parliamentary Private Secretary. You can find these by clicking ‘Highlights of Prime Ministers Questions’ on the bar above.

My commitment to Labour values stems from my school days, when I attended a very ‘high Tory’ school and felt like a fish out of water for the seven years I was there. Coming from a council house in Bracknell, I didn’t fit in very well with the kids from Ascot, Wokingham and Crowthorne! My school was committed to making sure we’d all take our places in society as the solid middle classes, so I was onto a loser from the start…..

I’m from a very big family and was proud to be the first girl to go on to higher education. I have a teaching degree and an MA, and was happily pottering along as a teacher and education adviser until politics grabbed me in my late twenties. There were two reasons for this. Firstly, I was really fed up with what the Tory Government was doing in education and secondly, my mum and dad both became seriously ill at the same time and I saw first hand what was happening to the National Health Service.

After I became involved in politics I stood for election and served as a County Councillor and Town Councillor in Bracknell, Berkshire. At various stages of my life I’ve been a teacher, an education advisor, worked in community relations for industry… and spent five years as Labour Member of Parliament for South Swindon. I’m now running my own business, an exciting new venture.

I’ve always been Labour so what I write comes from a left of centre position. If you’re looking for brickbats about Labour and bouquets about Tories, I suggest you visit one of the mainstream media sites (Times, Telegraph, Sky, Mail, Sun, Nick Robinson, need I go on?). There are plenty of Tory blogs as well and not many supportive Labour blogs.

I’m married to Mike and in my spare time love to read, visit the theatre and cinema, weed the garden and annoy as many Tories as possible. Hopefully this blog will help me achieve that ambition.

    Ah! Brings back good memories.
Really like the PMQs blog – how many to go before the summer break?

Great blog Anne. I was just reading Mr B’s – his last reference to Swindon was on May 2nd (indicative of his lack of interest and action) so it’s very refreshing to read a Parliamentarians insights on how ‘things’ are affecting our town.

    • Mr B popped up in last week’s debate on Phone Hacking, sadly not with an insight into life in Swindon but with an erudite quote from Stanley Baldwin! Looked as pleased as punch with himself afterwards.
